The Art of Peaking Too Soon
Think back to High School. Did you accomplish all that you wanted? Did you constantly feel like you were running out of time? Were you keeping a secret from your friends, family, and even yourself? These are the many questions in The Art of Peaking Too Soon. This coming of age play is full of complex characters and real life situations that take everyone in the audience back to their high school days.
One thing I truly enjoyed while working on this play was the incorporation of music and choreography. One moment in particular is when the protagonist (Haven) is late for her math final, and the scene plays out like a nightmare. In the exam, the students face forward and mime taking the test absent of all emotion as the teacher recites a monologue about the exam, underscored just by a metronome.
I personally have had this nightmare where I showed up to a math exam, and I had not prepared at all. This was a bit of inspiration for this piece. You can see a little bit of the choreography in the video at the bottom of this page.
