out skirts
As New Yorkers, we walk by people who have found themselves homeless daily. We can unfortunately become blind to their lives. out skirts is a one act play that focuses on someone living on the streets of New York and the people who work in a nearby homeless shelter.
I enjoyed creating the world that we find our protagonist, STAR, inhabiting. The playwright envisioned a scene where the audience would empathize with the character instead of judging them for their outward appearance. To accomplish this, the first scene was done in complete darkness, with the exception of a few flashlights and a candle. This left the audience to only know the character through their voice and the words they spoke.
A small ensemble controlled the flashlights and created sounds to heighten moments in STAR’s monologue. Those sounds included background noise of the city, cheering, humming of a lullaby, and echoes of STAR’S thoughts during moments of paranoia.
By creating this ensemble of light and sound, the audience was able to better empathies with STAR as they moved through moments of desperation, loss, anger, disgust, frustration, grief, and confusion.
A portion of our sales went to Women in Need (WIN), an incredible organization that helps shelters across the city. If you are interested in donating to WIN, I’ve attached the link below.
